Rift Valley Coffee Caucus

  • First time cooperation: 2025
  • Cooperation model: Indirect Trade

About

Established in 2023 from a modest support circle of like-minded farmers, the Rift Valley Coffee Caucus has grown into a closely-knit organization within the Western Rift Valley. Operating across key regions such as the Cherengany Hills, Nandi Hills, and the foothills of Mt. Elgon, the alliance leverages the advantages of high altitude and distinctive volcanic soil to optimize coffee quality.

The foundation of this network was laid by Stephen Nendela, founder of the renowned Muinami Estate. Drawing from his practical experience in estate management, he has united small-scale producers into a cohesive collective, fostering a mindset of sustainable and professional coffee production. Under Nendela’s leadership, the Rift Valley Coffee Caucus is asserting its position as a vital bridge, preserving the indigenous values of the Western Rift Valley while enhancing the economic value of specialty coffee in the region.

From Competition to Synergy

The formation of the Rift Valley Coffee Caucus stems from Stephen Nendela’s progressive operational philosophy. In a volatile coffee market, he recognized that pursuing individual interests through competition often leads to resource exhaustion, especially for small-scale producers. Instead, strategic cooperation serves as the “key” to unlocking faster and more sustainable development opportunities. With this conviction, Stephen convened the first group of farmers, establishing a network built on trust and shared objectives, transforming potential rivals into companions on the same path.

In its early stages, meetings led by Stephen moved beyond mere networking to address the economic and technical “bottlenecks” stifling the region’s potential. These included escalating input costs, inconsistent milling and processing, which diminished commercial value, and most notably, an opaque export system that acted as a major barrier for small farms seeking direct access to international markets.

By openly addressing these shared challenges through the lens of management science and practical experience, the group collaboratively sought process optimization solutions to transparently restructure the value chain and restore the rightful status of Western Rift Valley coffee.

Results of a Strategic Alliance

Shortly after those initial discussions, the spirit of cooperation quickly translated into tangible achievements. By 2024, the Rift Valley Coffee Caucus marked a historic milestone by successfully executing its first collective direct export. Overcoming complex supply chain barriers to deliver coffee straight from the farm to international roasters was both an economic victory and an assertion of farmer autonomy. The appeal of this model was so powerful that by the following season, membership surged to over thirty farming households.

The true bond of this community lies not in dry administrative structures or legal mandates, but in a fierce collective will: the desire to professionalize production processes. Each member understands that the only way to survive and thrive in the Specialty coffee segment is to continuously improve quality through scientific processing methods and rigorous farm management.

Knowledge as a Driver for Growth

Today, the Rift Valley Coffee Caucus has evolved far beyond a simple support group to become a dynamic peer-to-peer learning hub. Here, boundaries between farms are blurred through practical management exchange programs, where estate operational experiences are shared transparently and intuitively.

Periodic cupping sessions serve as more than just quality assessments; they are “classrooms” where farmers calibrate their cultivation and processing techniques based on objective sensory feedback. This cohesion is further materialized through the shared use of equipment and optimized logistics, reducing operational costs and enhancing the competitive edge of each member.

The group’s momentum is also bolstered by strategic partnerships with international organizations like The Chain Collaborative and expert guidance from overseas partners. These collaborations provide a standard reference framework, helping the group build scientific management systems and strengthen community bonds. This is clear evidence that the Western Kenyan highlands possess not only soil potential but also a powerful drive for development and an innovative mindset that rivals any renowned coffee region in the world.

Why we choose Rift Valley Coffee Caucus

The connection between XLIII Coffee and the Rift Valley Coffee Caucus is a meeting of two entities on the same wavelength of developmental thinking. We see in the Caucus a reflection of ourselves: a steadfast commitment to transparency and a desire to redefine the true value of coffee at its source. While the Rift Valley Coffee Caucus diligently builds a knowledge foundation for Western Rift Valley farmers to gain autonomy in their export journey, XLIII Coffee meticulously preserves those efforts through every cup of specialty coffee.

XLIII Coffee deeply values the human-centric principles that Stephen Nendela and his associates are nurturing: turning every farm into a cell of innovation. Rather than standing alone, they choose to interweave resources, share risks, and collectively elevate the stature of the Western Kenyan highlands on the global coffee map. This shared perspective on relationships valuing the philosophy of “partnership over confrontation” is what drives us to walk alongside them.
