Acaia
Acaia is an Arabica coffee variety from the Mundo Novo line, a hybrid of Typica and Bourbon. It was developed in Brazil in 1977 by agricultural scientists, and the name Acaia in the Tipi-Guarani means “fruit with large seeds” reflecting the prominent characteristic of this variety — larger coffee beans compared to other varieties.
Acaia is primarily grown in Brazil, especially in the Cerrado Mineiro region, at elevations ranging from 800 to 1,200 meters above sea level. This variety offers a sweet flavor profile, with distinctive notes of chocolate, caramel, and nuts, creating a smooth coffee experience. As it cools, bright citrus and gentle rose aromas begin to emerge, adding depth to the flavor.
Notably, many farms growing Acaia in Brazil have won awards, particularly in the Brazil’s Cup of Excellence competitions, demonstrating the superior quality and potential of this variety within the Specialty Coffee community.
