Catimor
Catimor is a hybrid coffee variety developed in Portugal in 1959 by crossing Caturra (a type of Arabica) with the Timor Hybrid—a natural cross between Arabica and Robusta. It was specifically bred to resist coffee leaf rust and to better adapt to challenging growing conditions.
Although its Robusta lineage has made some in the coffee world hesitant, Catimor has proven its value through high productivity and the ability to thrive at lower altitudes—areas where many traditional Arabica varieties struggle.
In the specialty coffee scene, Catimor offers a cup with bright acidity, gentle sweetness, and occasional hints of berries or herbs. While it may not have the complexity of elite specialty varieties, it’s a pleasant, approachable choice for those who enjoy a softer, more accessible profile.
