New Update: Q Grader Upgrades to Evolved Q Grader Based on the CVA Framework
The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) have announced a major collaboration to upgrade the Q Grader program. Under this initiative, the Q Grader certification will evolve into the Evolved Q Grader — the first and only professional credential built upon the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) framework.

What’s New with the Evolved Q Grader?
The Q Grader program was established 20 years ago by the Coffee Quality Institute, a longstanding partner of the Specialty Coffee Association. Originally designed to train professionals to evaluate coffee using the 2004 SCA cupping form, the Q Grader program has grown into the largest global education program for coffee quality assessment.
The Evolved Q Grader is a comprehensive upgrade of the original certification. It is based on the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA), an innovative system introduced in 2023. This upgraded version aims to better reflect the full value of coffee in today’s complex supply chains.
What sets it apart?
Rather than focusing solely on flavor, the new system expands to assess a broader range of attributes that influence the quality and experience of coffee — including internal factors, external appearance, potential defects, and production conditions.
The updated program is also more scientific, practical, and aligned with real-world applications. It enables sensory professionals to adopt a more in-depth, multidimensional, and modern approach to evaluating coffee. Through this shift, the program aims to train and certify professionals who can assess coffee through a more comprehensive and research-based lens.
Participants will learn practical techniques in sensory evaluation, green coffee defect identification, and quality control within a robust, research-driven curriculum. Upon completion, students will be licensed as Q Graders under the new system.
Who Should Be Paying Attention?
If you work in sensory analysis or coffee education — especially if you’ve previously taken courses from CQI or SCA — you should stay informed and begin transitioning as soon as possible.
If you already hold a Q Grader certification (Arabica or Robusta) issued before September 30, 2025, or advanced certifications such as CVA for Cuppers, Sensory Skills Professional, SCA Sensory Skills AST, Q Assistant Instructor, or Q Instructor, you do not need to retake the full 6-day course.
Instead, you can transition to the Evolved Q system by taking a 2-day CVA for Cuppers course and completing the registration form. Note: You must complete this process before December 31, 2025 to qualify for the fast-track pathway.
How to Become an Evolved Q Grader
Depending on your current background, there are two pathways:
Fast Track: For Current Q Graders or Certified Sensory Professionals
If you hold a Q Grader certificate (Arabica or Robusta) issued before September 30, 2025, or have a certification such as SCA Sensory Skills Professional, follow these steps:
- Step 1: Complete the CVA for Cuppers 2-day course before December 31, 2025 (skip if you already hold this certification).
- Step 2: Fill out the Evolved Q Registration Form before December 31, 2025.
After completing both steps, you will be officially recognized as an Evolved Q Grader under the new CQI system.
For Newcomers Without Prior Certification
If you do not hold any sensory or Q Grader certifications, you must complete the full 6-day Evolved Q Grader course:
- Days 1–2: Physical Assessment — covering vision, smell, taste, and other sensory-related biological metrics.
- Days 3–6: Advanced Sensory Evaluation — including descriptive skills, emotional response recognition, and evaluation of external attributes of coffee.
The first Evolved Q Grader course will be held in October 2025. You can subscribe to updates from SCA or CQI to be notified once enrollment opens.
How to Become an Evolved Q Grader Instructor
Just like learners, there are two instructor pathways based on your current qualifications:
Fast Track: For Those with Relevant Teaching Certifications
If you are already an instructor or trainer, you may transition through the following actions before December 31, 2025:
|
Current Role |
Required Action |
|
CVA Trainer for Cuppers |
Submit the Evolved Q Instructor Registration Form |
|
Q Instructor (Arabica or Robusta) |
Attend the CVA for Cuppers course (2 days), then submit the registration form |
|
Q Assistant Instructor |
Attend the CVA for Cuppers course (2 days), then submit the registration form |
|
SCA Sensory Skills AST |
Attend the CVA for Cuppers course (2 days), then submit the registration form |
Important: All required steps must be completed before December 31, 2025 to qualify for the fast-track pathway.
After the Fast Track Deadline (Post-December 31, 2025)
If you are unable to transition before the deadline, you will need to follow the full pathway:
- Step 1: Become an SCA Sensory Skills AST (Authorized SCA Trainer).
- Step 2: Register for and complete the full 6-day Evolved Q Grader course.
- Step 3: Join the Evolved Q Grader Instructor Training Program (details to be announced by CQI).
All current Q Locations, except for those running post-harvest processing programs, will transition into SCA Premier Training Campuses. These campuses emphasize immersive, high-quality education environments for professional coffee training.
If you’re involved in sensory science, education, or coffee quality research, now is the perfect time to prepare for this transition. Becoming an Evolved Q Grader not only updates your professional knowledge but also expands your opportunities within the global coffee industry.
