Space & Architecture XLIII Coffee Hoan Kiem – Sensory laboratory in the heart of heritage
Amidst the hustle and bustle of Hanoi’s cultural landscape, a new space has opened not only to serve coffee, but to create a moment of silence. Located on the second floor of 2D Quang Trung building, XLIII Coffee’s fifth flagship store is a purposefully designed oasis, an invitation to leave the noisy world outside behind and embark on a journey of purity.
The journey to get here is part of the experience. The humble entrance through a transitional corridor, up a flight of stairs away from the street traffic – it is the first ritual of the “Sensory Reset” philosophy . A delicate preparation for the senses to be purified, ready for what awaits inside: a “Laboratory of Senses” where original flavors are honored at their purest level.
Design philosophy
Manifesto of Purity
Stepping inside, the philosophy of XLIII Coffee is interpreted through a sophisticated architectural language, where each choice carries a profound meaning, serving the ultimate purpose of revealing the core value of the coffee bean.
White canvas and invitation to gather
The entire space is enveloped in a pristine white color scheme. Beyond a purely aesthetic decision, it becomes a purposeful functional tool. The white wall acts as a “ gallery ,” a clean canvas that removes all visual distractions, returning the viewer’s focus to what is truly important.
Against that white background, the clear amber color of the filter coffee, the lush green of the ornamental plants, and the subtle movements of people become the only vivid highlights. It is the physical manifestation of the value of “Transparency” – a space without concealment, without embellishment, allowing the original quality and beauty of the product to shine through.
The central bar or the “stage” of precision
The heart of the space, where all eyes converge, is the central bar with luxurious matte black. Strategically placed according to the ” Focal Point Theory “, the bar appears as a modern stage, where the art and science of mixing is performed. The strong contrast between the solid black block and the surrounding white background is a declaration of technology, of precision down to the smallest detail.
This is a true “laboratory”, where powerful machines like the La Marzocco Strada S , Ditting 807 Lab Sweet and Mahlkönig E80 Supreme are not just tools, but powerful partners. Here, the philosophy of “Describe the Origin” and “Taste the Origin” is realized visually, turning each act of brewing into a performance of knowledge and respect.
Natural breath contains the comfort from the source
A breath of nature is interwoven between the minimalist lines and neutral colors. The green plants are cleverly arranged to add to the connection and balance. The green foliage is a tangible reminder of the origin of each coffee bean – a product forged from soil, water and a healthy ecosystem.
Applying the principle of ” Biophilic Design “, the presence of nature brings softness and vitality to a space that has a laboratory spirit. Science has proven that natural elements help reduce stress, increase concentration and sharpen the senses – an ideal condition to fully perceive the most complex and delicate layers of flavor.
Space Journey
A ritual of sensory “curation”
The experience at XLIII Coffee Hoan Kiem does not begin when you receive your cup of coffee, but from the moment you decide to come. The entire journey of movement and interaction in the space is arranged as a delicate ritual, carefully “curated” to guide and purify the senses.
A transitional threshold to leave the outside world behind
Choosing an entrance that is not located on the facade but hidden in a small corridor is an architectural decision full of psychological significance. The long corridor with its nostalgic blue ceramic tiled wall creates a buffer zone, a ” liminal space ” – where the boundary between the noise outside and the tranquility inside becomes clear.
As you walk, the sounds and hustle and bustle of the city gradually fade into the background. The act of consciously climbing the stairs to a higher level of space is not only a physical change, but also a symbolic elevation of the experience, away from the ordinary. The whole process naturally triggers the “ Sensory Regeneration ” mechanism, preparing your mind for a more receptive and deeper state.
Symphony of light and materials
The interior space is a symphony coordinated by light and materials. Natural light, given maximum priority through large windows and skylights, brings honesty and clarity. Under this light, the true color of coffee is displayed most accurately, without being distorted by artificial light sources. The LED lighting system is delicately arranged, playing the role of emphasizing the bar “stage” and leading attention, creating deep light and dark areas.
The materials are chosen to evoke subtle sensations. You can feel the cool, smooth surface of the black tabletop when you place your hand on it, the warmth and solidity of the oak furniture, or the soft, supple feel of the felt on the green sofa. This diverse but harmonious interaction gently stimulates the sense of touch, keeping the senses awake but not overloaded, creating the perfect environment for enjoyment and contemplation.
XLIII Coffee Hoan Kiem is the embodiment of a coffee shop that carries a manifesto expressed in the language of space, light and stillness. This place was built not to “create” flavors, but to ” preserve and reveal” the most original values hidden deep inside each coffee bean.
In this sensory laboratory, every architectural element is a finely tuned tool to eliminate noise, allowing the viewer to have a direct dialogue with the source. Minimalism here does not mean emptiness, but rather a fullness of concentration. Silence is not silence, but a space where stories from faraway lands can be heard most clearly.
This is not just a place to drink coffee. This is a place to listen.
And through that, it most strongly affirms the vision and new era that XLIII Coffee opened in Hanoi: an era where true values are honored above all.
