According to the international journal Stirb, a spokesperson for the Houthis (representing the Zaidi Shiite Muslim group in northern Yemen) has announced that they will suspend attacks on ships during the ceasefire but have not ruled out the possibility of resuming them. The 42-day cessation of hostilities depends on the release of hostages and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip. In an emailed statement, the Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) stated that they would limit attacks on ships linked to Israel until “all phases” of the ceasefire are fully implemented.

The ceasefire in Gaza has raised hopes for restoring the Red Sea shipping route after more than a year of disruptions due to conflict. Since tensions escalated in late 2023, Houthi militants in Yemen have carried out multiple attacks on commercial vessels, forcing many shipping companies to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope. This detour adds approximately 4,000 miles, extending transit times by 10 days and significantly increasing shipping costs. These disruptions have directly impacted the global coffee market, with robusta prices soaring by over 30% in January last year. Additionally, shipping delays have posed major challenges for exporters, especially in Ethiopia and Vietnam, struggling to deliver their products to European markets on time.

Although the ceasefire has allowed some vessels to pass safely through the Red Sea, shipping companies remain cautious before resuming normal operations. Major corporations such as Maersk, MSC, and Mitsui OSK Lines have yet to commit to returning to this route due to persistent risks. Since November 2023, two ships have been sunk and several others attacked, keeping maritime insurance costs high. Furthermore, the Houthis have stated that their restraint will only last as long as the ceasefire remains in effect, meaning any shift in the conflict could quickly destabilize the situation.

The impact of these disruptions extends beyond transportation and affects global trade. Many European buyers have adjusted their import strategies, shifting towards sourcing coffee from Brazil rather than Asian suppliers. This puts pressure on major coffee-producing nations like Vietnam, which heavily rely on the Red Sea route. Additionally, the Suez Canal—a critical hub for international trade—has seen revenue losses exceeding $2 billion as transit volumes have dropped by half.

While the ceasefire presents a glimmer of hope, fully restoring the Red Sea shipping route will take time. Shipping companies will only return when there is a concrete guarantee of security, which depends on the evolving political and military situation in the region. In the short term, the coffee market and other industries reliant on this route will continue facing challenges, from high shipping costs to volatile pricing.
