Drip
Drip is a manual coffee brewing method that originated in Japan but has gained widespread popularity in the Western world. This method involves using a cone-shaped or wavy dripper placed over a carafe or mug, with a paper filter holding the coffee grounds inside.
The brewing process requires hot water to be poured slowly in a circular motion, allowing it to saturate the coffee bed before dripping down into the carafe. This controlled extraction results in a clean, crisp cup with well-defined flavors and a smooth finish.
In the specialty coffee scene, paper filters play a crucial role in removing coffee fines and oils, preserving the coffee’s pure, original flavors. However, grind size significantly affects the extraction process. If the coffee grounds are too coarse, water passes through too quickly, leading to an under-extracted, weak cup. Therefore, adjusting the grind size appropriately is key to achieving an optimal extraction and bringing out the best flavors in the coffee.
