FDA Officially Recognizes Coffee as a Healthy Beverage

On December 19, 2024, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially announced that brewed coffee qualifies to carry the “healthy” label. This marks the first time in history that a legal definition formally acknowledges coffee as part of a nutritionally sound lifestyle.

FDA đã chấp nhận cà phê là đồ uống lành mạnh

Specifically, the FDA’s new definition of what constitutes a “healthy” beverage requires that it be low in calories (with fewer than 5 calories per 12 ounces and per serving), contain no added sugars, and have no ingredients harmful to health. Based on measurements of its composition and nutritional content, coffee qualifies as a beverage that meets these healthy criteria. William “Bill” Murray, President and CEO of the National Coffee Association (NCA), stated, “The FDA is absolutely right to affirm that coffee is part of a healthy lifestyle. Research has shown that coffee drinkers live longer, healthier, and happier lives.”

However, while coffee is inherently healthy, not every cup of coffee meets that standard. In July 2024, Snapchill — a notable company in the ready-to-drink (RTD) chilled coffee sector — voluntarily recalled all its products due to concerns about contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for causing botulism, a potentially deadly foodborne illness.

No illnesses were reported, but the recall was issued because the company’s production process had not been properly registered with the FDA, as required for low-acid canned foods. This incident affected 296 canned products distributed under more than 270 coffee brands.

The Snapchill incident serves as a clear warning — even pioneering brands can face serious risks if proper food safety protocols are not strictly followed. And this issue extends beyond canned or commercial coffee. Specialty Coffee, with all its focus on flavor and origin, must now also operate within this new framework: clean coffee – transparent coffee – safe coffee.

Specialty Coffee has long been associated with the values of transparency, traceability, and sustainability. Yet, these standards often remain internal to the industry. As consumers increasingly prioritize their health, these once “industry-internal” values must step into the public spotlight and become mainstream selection criteria.

The convergence of health-related claims, transparent production responsibility, and market safety regulations now demands stricter and more formalized standards — including:

Mandatory clear labeling of ingredients and processing methods;

International-level hygiene and sanitation requirements;

Limits on additives and artificial flavorings used in flavored coffees.

The FDA’s recognition of coffee as a healthy beverage represents a significant milestone. However, this recognition also comes with a new challenge: not every cup of coffee is truly healthy unless it is produced through safe and transparent processes.

It’s time for the Specialty Coffee sector to take stronger action in proving that every cup is not only high-quality and ethically sourced, but also clean and safe. Only then will coffee be genuinely “healthy” — not just on certification papers, but in every consumer experience.
