Microlots coffee provide transparency in the supply chain

As we know, traceability is now not only a critical criterion but also a fundamental principle in the specialty coffee industry. Micro lots have emerged as a viable solution, allowing roasters to provide transparency in the supply chain and to highlight the unique stories behind each product.

Microlot Coffee

Although there is no official or universal definition for a micro lot, it is generally understood as a batch of coffee harvested from a single plot within a farm. These plots are often considered the “best” areas of the farm, where ideal growing conditions allow the coffee’s unique characteristics to shine. According to Bram de Hoog, founder of the Paso Paso coffee collective, a micro lot should be seen as a special subset within a larger batch, which may come from an individual producer or a village, as long as it stands out from the larger production.

Producing micro lot coffee not only brings out unique flavors but also allows farmers to earn higher prices. Roasters often focus on highlighting the distinctive flavors of micro lots, which helps to build brand identity and set these products apart from others. Moreover, due to the small scale of these lots, roasters can emphasize that these coffees are available only for a limited time, adding value and exclusivity.

Despite the cost efficiency of larger coffee batches, the demand for micro lots is steadily growing. According to the Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide, the total market share of contracts representing lots under 1,000 pounds rose from 19% to 25% between 2016 and 2023. This shift reflects a positive change in consumer awareness of the value of micro lots.

In the future, micro lots will continue to attract attention from roasters and consumers due to their traceability and guaranteed quality. These small batches offer not only a unique flavor experience but also support small-scale farmers by ensuring they receive fair value for their products. Furthermore, micro lots encourage competition within the coffee industry, pushing producers to improve product quality.

As consumers become more aware of and appreciate the distinct characteristics of each micro lot, it will create a strong incentive for farmers to adopt the best farming practices.
