Excelsa
Excelsa coffee (Coffea excelsa) is a variety of the Liberica species, originating from Central Africa and now widely cultivated in Southeast Asia and India. This tree-like coffee plant grows best at altitudes between 1,000 and 1,300 meters. While it is naturally resistant to diseases, it requires attentive care. Excelsa beans have a lower caffeine content compared to Arabica and Robusta.
Excelsa stands out for its complex flavor profile, combining tropical fruit notes like mango and lychee with hints of hazelnut and gentle woodiness. Its tannic qualities contribute to a light astringency in the aftertaste, balanced by moderate acidity and a medium bitterness—creating a layered and nuanced tasting experience.
With growing global interest in specialty coffee and sustainable agriculture, Excelsa holds potential as a unique contributor to coffee diversity and innovation in the years ahead.
