Caffeine in coffee and what you need to know!

Caffeine in coffee, a naturally occurring compound found in coffee, is known for its ability to increase alertness and improve focus. However, using too much caffeine can negatively affect your health. Join XLIII Coffee to find out some information about the caffeine content in coffee you should know!

What is caffeine?

Caffeine is a chemical compound called 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine, naturally produced by plant enzymes to repel insects. Caffeine is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system and increases the speed of information transport. This makes caffeine more likely to help you feel more alert and focused.

Caffeine content in a cup of coffee

The caffeine content in a cup of coffee will be affected by brewing methods. According to a report by Medibank magazine (Australia), an average cup of pour-over coffee with a capacity of 250ml can contain about 150 – 240 milligrams of caffeine. Coffees such as espresso or latte have about 105 – 110 milligrams in a 250ml cup. Instant coffee typically contains 80 – 120 milligrams of caffeine per 250ml and decaf varieties will contain around 2 – 6 milligrams.

In addition, the amount of caffeine in coffee is also determined by the type of beans you use. Robusta coffee usually has a caffeine content nearly twice as high as Arabica beans. The ratio of coffee to water in the extraction is also an important factor that affects the composition of the finished cup. The more coffee, the greater the caffeine content. The common balance ratio for mixing methods is 1:16. If you prefer a stronger, more caffeinated coffee, you can increase the coffee-to-water ratio to 1:12.

How long does caffeine take to affect the body?

Caffeine is known to be a stimulant, speeding up brain and nervous system activity. This substance is easily absorbed by the body when drinking a cup of coffee and can help users feel alert and improve concentration. Metabolism increases the circulation of substances such as cortisol and adrenaline while enhancing many of the body’s basic cognitive functions.

Users can begin to feel the effects of caffeine within 15 minutes of coffee consumption. The effects of caffeine can be most felt 30 to 60 minutes after consumption. After about 5 hours, the original state before drinking coffee will return because caffeine has a half-life of about 5 hours. In other words, the amount of caffeine in the body will decrease by half every 5 hours. However, the effects of caffeine affect each person differently. Many people will have a faster reaction to caffeine or a slower half-life.

The amount of caffeine is safe for the body

Caffeine has been shown by many studies to have the ability to improve some health problems and can be added to a healthy diet. However, too much caffeine can cause side effects such as anxiety, sleep disruption, heart palpitations, and restlessness.

According to experts, consuming caffeine in the range of 400 – 600 milligrams of caffeine per day usually does not cause side effects in most people. This figure is based on an average of approximately 6 milligrams per kilogram of body weight (3 milligrams per pound), or about 4 to 6 cups of coffee per day. Therefore, an adult with normal health can safely ingest a maximum of about 400 milligrams of caffeine, which is equivalent to approximately 4 cups of coffee per day. However, this limit is expected according to the overall average condition. Each person’s body will have different levels. Therefore, you should monitor your condition when drinking coffee and consult a specialist to find out the right amount of caffeine for your body.
