Mazagran coffee – a unique feature of original iced coffee in overcast weather

On hot days, there’s probably nothing better than a cup of iced coffee. In some countries where the weather is different, this cool, passionate drink is also called Mazagran coffee. It is also referred to as the original iced coffee by historical experts. What’s special about Mazagran? Explore with XLIII Coffee!

What is Mazagran coffee?

Mazagran is a sweetened cold coffee popular in European countries such as Algeria, Portugal, Spain, and Austria. This drink is said to have originated in the 1840s in Algeria. Its original recipe only included cold coffee and water, earning it the nickname “original iced coffee.” Throughout its history, Mazagran spread widely to many other countries. The recipe is also transformed into many new styles based on the characteristics of each region. Accompanying ingredients for making Mazagran may include lemon juice, cane sugar, mint, and various spirits.

The story of the origin of Mazagran coffee

According to historical experts, Mazagran was invented in 1840 in Algeria, when this country was still under French colonial rule. The name “Mazagran” is said to be taken from a fortress called Mazagran in the coastal town of Mostaganem, in northwestern Algeria. In 1837, the French colonialists occupied this fortress for several years. Under the hot weather of Algeria, French colonial soldiers drank coffee with ice or water added to create a refreshing drink. Some soldiers used sweetened coffee syrup or added various spirits to drinks like cognac or rum to stay awake throughout the night. Upon returning to Paris, these soldiers ordered Mazagran-style coffees in cafes and bars. This makes it a more popular drink in France.

The culture of drinking Mazagran coffee with a Mazagran cup

In many countries, coffee culture can be associated with certain brewing methods, processing methods, and even brewing equipment or beverage containers. The Mazagran cup is part of the Mazagran coffee-drinking culture in some countries. Traditional Algerian coffee pots inspire these cups. They are usually made of porcelain, terracotta, or glass and are designed with legs. Some Mazagran cups may also have additional handles. As in France, Mazagran coffee is served in a Mazagran glass, closely resembling a traditional Mazagran cup.

Mazagran coffee became a treasure of Portugal

According to cultural exchange and long history between Portugal and some North African countries, Mazagran coffee gradually spread to Portugal and some countries such as Spain, Austria, etc. For each country, the recipes are often modified according to the regional variations. As in Portugal, people often make Mazagran with concentrated coffee or espresso, ice, and lemon. Some recipes may add rum. This uniqueness has made Mazagran coffee especially popular in Portugal with the nickname Portuguese iced coffee. Moreover, for the Portuguese, Mazagran is also considered a Portuguese drink and a national treasure.
