Space & Architecture of XLIII Coffee Thao Dien – Honoring Heritage Culture

The new destination in XLIII Coffee’s development journey at 19 Street 2, Press Village, Thao Dien Ward is a living symbol of the “honoring authentic values” philosophy. From architecture to experience, from space to flavor – every element is designed with the same mindset: discovering and preserving the most genuine aspects of origin.

Original Architecture and Continuity

A Dialogue Between Past and Present

For the first time, XLIII Coffee has chosen to establish itself in a house with traditional Vietnamese architecture. The combination of architectural heritage and specialty coffee culture creates an experience both novel and familiar – where contemporary coffee style immerses itself in the peaceful setting of a purely Vietnamese “home.”

What could be more bold than harmonizing two seemingly opposite ideologies and cultures?

Hidden among the peaceful streets of Thao Dien, XLIII Coffee’s fourth branch appears like a moment of silence amid the city’s bustling rhythm. The first scene that catches visitors’ eyes is the pure white wall with a green wooden door – a thin boundary between the lively world outside and the tranquil space within.

The most special aspect of XLIII Coffee’s spatial philosophy lies not in what has been added, but in what has been preserved.

This choice to inherit the original architecture is not merely an aesthetic decision but also has profound functional significance. The structure of traditional Vietnamese houses is designed to create microclimates – with airy courtyards that help natural air circulation, maintaining stable temperatures year-round. Environmental psychology research has shown that stability in temperature and humidity significantly affects the ability to perceive subtle flavors.

The house is imbued with traditional Vietnamese architecture, with both floors having meticulously designed spaces measuring approximately 9.85m × 7.92m. The layout focuses on creating optimal flow between different functional areas. This element is adopted and preserved almost intact by XLIII Coffee, from the overall structure to the smallest details. This is not a random coincidence but a deliberate choice, honestly reflecting the “Protect the Origin” philosophy that the brand has consistently maintained throughout its journey of creating specialty coffee value.

The spiral staircase – a distinctive architectural element of the space – appears as a living sculpture with pure white banisters and glossy black handrails flowing gracefully. The elegant curves of the staircase create a transitional experience between floor levels, forcing users to move at a slower pace, helping to calm the senses and prepare psychologically for the upcoming coffee experience. This is a phenomenon that psychologists call “sensory reset” – the process of resetting sensations before entering an experience that requires high sensory focus.

Looking closer at the details, one cannot overlook the intricately carved partition screens, which serve both aesthetic purposes and sound adjustment functions. The spatial structure with wooden surfaces and perforated patterns creates natural sound absorption characteristics, helping maintain noise levels at around 45-50 decibels – the ideal threshold for flavor perception. Scientific research has proven that environments that are too noisy (above 70dB) or too quiet (below 35dB) can negatively affect the ability to distinguish flavor notes, especially the subtle aromas in coffee.

The minimal ceiling patterns are compensated by a vibrant naturally distributed lighting system, combined with solar-powered lights equipped for thriving indoor plants. Instead of harsh direct light, the space is covered with soft, even illumination – ideal conditions for evaluating coffee color and clarity. The combination of natural light and LED systems with fine-tuned color temperatures ensures accuracy in recognizing the visual characteristics of coffee without distorting color perception.

Each preserved architectural element carries a story about origin and value, parallel with the function of enhancing sensory experience. Is this coincidence? Perhaps not – this is a choice, evidence of the “Sensory Architecture” approach – where every design decision is considered in terms of its impact on the flavor perception of the taster. And XLIII Coffee harmonizes perfectly with all of this!

Living Space and “Coffee Home” Experience

Environmental Psychology and Flavor Perception

Crossing the first threshold, you need to remove your personal footwear to wear house slippers – a ritualistic habit very familiar to Vietnamese people but also full of psychological meaning. This action is not only respect for traditional culture but also marks a psychological transition from an ordinary state to a special state – a phenomenon called “liminality” in cultural and social psychology research, where an individual stands at the threshold of change to receive a new state.

“Coffee home” – XLIII Coffee wishes to evoke comfortable and serene emotions like coming home with each visit.

Research in environmental psychology indicates that when people feel safe and comfortable in a space – especially one with a family-like atmosphere – the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, leading to an optimal relaxed state for perceiving and distinguishing complex flavor layers.

The charming inner courtyard with natural light falling through the eaves brings a cozy aesthetic element, capable of creating a positive relaxed state and enhancing concentration. The bougainvillea climbing the walls with clusters of white and light pink flowers not only beautifies the space but also provides oxygen and naturally adjusts humidity – two factors directly affecting the ability to perceive aroma.

Traditional Vietnamese furniture is arranged according to the principle of “essential minimalism” – keeping the most necessary elements with high cultural symbolic value such as long benches, intricate wooden chairs, and dragon-head seats, while eliminating superfluous elements that could cause visual distraction. This purposeful simplicity helps reduce sensory fatigue – a phenomenon that occurs when the brain has to process too much sensory information simultaneously, leading to reduced ability to distinguish subtle characteristics in coffee.

The black-and-white patterned tile floor creates a “sensory pathway” guiding customers from the entrance to the brewing counter and different seating areas. Research on movement and architecture has shown that movement patterns within a space significantly affect the overall experience, with clear and rhythmic pathways helping to create a sense of organization and reassurance – psychological conditions necessary for evaluating and enjoying complex flavors.

Classic & Modern Intersection

Science Behind Subtle Aesthetics

Amid the predominantly white-gray space, the bar counter with its warm yellow tone stands out like a statement about technology’s presence within heritage. The central position of the bar counter follows the intelligent aesthetic principle called “focal point theory” in spatial design – creating a natural focal point of attention, thereby guiding visual experience and orienting movement within the space.

The heart of the bar – the La Marzocco Strada X 1Gr coffee machine – appears as an industrial art piece amid the nostalgic setting. The contrast between advanced technology and traditional architecture creates a perfect opposition phenomenon – stimulating the brain to process information more actively, thereby enhancing alertness and perceptual ability.

Notable is how XLIII Coffee designs its water system – an element that makes up 98% of a cup of coffee. Although not directly visible, advanced water filtration systems are installed to create different water profiles, optimized for each type of coffee according to its origin. Understanding that mineral content in water (especially the ratio of magnesium and calcium) has a decisive influence on extracting flavor compounds, XLIII Coffee has transformed this scientific element into an essential part of the overall sensory experience.

The second floor of the space has been converted into a quiet working area, with sound-absorbing materials subtly integrated into traditional decorative elements, maintaining aesthetics while ensuring sound control functionality.

The lighting system combines natural and artificial light designed based on research on biologically appropriate lighting, changing color temperature and intensity according to the time of day, supporting natural biorhythms and optimizing the alertness of the nervous system. This is especially important for flavor perception, as research has shown that the sensitivity of taste and smell changes according to daily biorhythms.

Symphony of Colors and Emotions

Elevating Multi-sensory Experience

The color palette of the space is chosen like a composer selecting notes for a symphony – each color has its own role in creating the overall harmony. Pure white walls create an ideal neutral background for evaluating coffee color – one of the important indicators of roasting and brewing quality. All like necessary pauses in music, creating space for high notes to develop.

Above all, the dominant white color symbolizes transparency – one of the core values that XLIII Coffee always upholds. Against this pure white background, coffee colors appear most clearly – from the amber shade of filter coffee to the golden-brown layer on an espresso shot.

Elegant gray accents appear like bass notes in the spatial composition, creating depth and balance. The neutral gray evokes the ash color of coffee beans during the roasting process – a decisive transformation phase where the roaster must patiently wait for the first crack to release hidden aromas. XLIII Coffee applies the principle of “visual grounding” – creating visual anchors that help the eyes rest between moments of focus.

Warm cream and luxurious golden-brown appear as refined touches, bringing familiarity and closeness. These color tones evoke the golden crema layer of an espresso shot when freshly completed – a sign of freshness and quality in each roast. Additionally, the aesthetic rule of color states that warm tones in the yellow-brown spectrum can stimulate taste and smell, enhancing the ability to perceive caramel, chocolate, and roasted notes in coffee – a phenomenon called “sensory congruence.”

Natural wooden elements harmoniously connect the interior components, bringing a natural breath to the space. Wood grain and warm texture create a familiar feeling, as a reminder of coffee’s natural origin – a product of soil, water, air, and sunlight.

The green carpet covering the staircase creates a bold color accent amid the neutral palette. This green evokes lush coffee hills, where ripe red coffee cherries stand out like precious gems – an image that XLIII Coffee always looks toward in its journey to find and protect valuable raw materials.

Through this refined approach, XLIII Coffee has proven that space is not just a place to enjoy coffee but also a living work of art – where all elements blend in a symphony of emotions, serving the ultimate purpose: honoring and clarifying the distinctive flavors of each specialty coffee according to the brand’s “Taste the Origin” philosophy.

In an increasingly digitized and rapidly urbanizing world, XLIII Coffee Thao Dien stands firm as an oasis of slowness and refinement – a place to slow down, to listen, and to feel – things that seem simple but are becoming luxuries in modern life.

The Thao Dien branch is powerful evidence of the commitment to the “Origin Journey” – the journey to find, protect, describe, and taste authentic values. Through each preserved architectural detail, through each refined design standard, and through each cup of coffee served in this space, XLIII Coffee is telling a larger story. A story about how modern humans can honor the past without being trapped in it, about how technology can harmonize with tradition instead of replacing it, and about how each of our senses deserves to be respected and nurtured.
