Coffee consumers should stay alert to the rising wave of Greenwashing

A report from the European Commission sent shockwaves through the consumer world, revealing that over 40% of eco-friendly claims from 344 companies, from fast fashion to plastic packaging and beverages, were false or unsubstantiated. This finding raises an important question for consumers about which products are truly sustainable and which are merely greenwashing attempts to mislead.

Greenwashing – The truth behind “Eco-Friendly” claims

Greenwashing refers to the practice of companies “painting themselves green” with flashy claims such as “eco-friendly,” “clean,” or “carbon-neutral,” without actually reforming polluting production processes. Their goal is to exploit consumer trust and willingness to pay a premium, turning the desire to help the environment into profit.

Greenwashing has serious consequences, undermining genuine sustainability efforts. It is not merely exaggerated advertising but a systematic form of deception and concept manipulation, because it:

  • Obscures real efforts: Companies genuinely investing in sustainability are disadvantaged, while “greenwashed” products dominate the market.
  • Erodes consumer trust: Once deceived, customers may become skeptical of all products, even from authentic brands.
  • Carries legal consequences: Many countries, including the United States, France, Australia, and others in Europe, impose heavy fines on companies caught engaging in greenwashing.

The coffee industry is not immune to Greenwashing

Even the coffee industry, closely tied to nature and the livelihoods of millions of farmers, has become a target for greenwashing tactics.

Starbucks provides a notable example. In 2008, the company announced that by 2015, all take-away cups would be recyclable or reusable. However, this goal was never achieved. In 2019, Starbucks introduced a new pledge: “double the recycled content and reusability of cups and packaging by 2022,” yet it offered no concrete criteria or metrics to track progress. Earlier, in 2018, Starbucks launched a “strawless lid” to replace plastic straws. Some studies found that these new lids actually contained more plastic than the combined previous lids and straws.

Starbucks introduced a “strawless lid” as part of its sustainability efforts, but the new lid actually contains more plastic than the previous combination of lid and straw.

Another example highlighted by Ethical Addictions Coffee Roasters involves an instant coffee brand that promoted “a 98% reduction in packaging” when switching from glass jars to plastic pouches. The catch: glass can be recycled indefinitely, whereas plastic pouches cannot.

XLIII Coffee focuses on real sustainability, not Greenwashing

Amid the ongoing debate around greenwashing, XLIII Coffee consistently demonstrates its commitment to sustainability through tangible actions. This is evident in the brand’s approach to packaging: rather than relying on superficial “green” solutions, XLIII Coffee prioritizes a balance between preserving coffee quality and implementing truly sustainable practices.

XLIII Coffee uses a two-layer packaging system. The inner layer, which comes into direct contact with the coffee beans, is a Dutch Coffee Pack (from the Netherlands) with a zip closure, certified as Carbon Compensated – meaning the emissions from its production have been offset – and fully recyclable. Inside this bag is a layer of virgin LD-PE 4 plastic film that protects the coffee from moisture and oxygen while preserving its flavor, all while remaining environmentally conscious. The outer box is designed for easy sorting and recycling after use, supporting a circular packaging model and minimizing hard-to-process waste.

Additionally, XLIII Coffee prioritizes serving coffee in glass cups at its cafés instead of plastic, and optimizes every detail across its value chain to reduce waste and enhance sustainability.

Greenwashing not only erodes consumer trust but also obscures genuine sustainability efforts. While many brands opt to “paint themselves green” to mislead customers, XLIII Coffee chooses a path of transparency, focusing on tangible actions and measurable changes that are truly sustainable and fully accountable.
