WCR and Cornell Partner to Lead a $5 Million Coffee Improvement Project
Recently, World Coffee Research (WCR) and Cornell University have partnered to launch a $5 million Coffee Improvement Program, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Aimed at fostering the development of high-quality, resilient coffee varieties to support smallholder coffee farmers worldwide, this five-year project focuses on enhancing disease resistance, boosting productivity, and improving coffee quality.

The core focus of the Coffee Improvement Program includes:
- Developing Breeding Tools: Creating tools to identify critical genetic markers, improving breeding accuracy and speed, and developing sensory evaluation tools for both Arabica and Robusta coffee.
- Strengthening Breeding Program Capacity: Providing tools and training for coffee breeders in nine producing countries, equipping them to better address climate and market challenges.
- Researching Seed Systems: Building tools to evaluate seed supply and demand dynamics, improving farmers’ access to high-quality coffee varieties.
This project is part of USAID’s broader $57 million initiative to support sustainable agricultural solutions and strengthen global food security. WCR and Cornell’s Innovation Lab for Crop Improvement (ILCI) will pioneer and expand the project in the coming years.
Specifically, the Coffee Improvement Program builds on the global Arabica coffee breeding initiative Innovea, launched by the coffee sector in 2022, and will extend to a new Robusta breeding initiative in 2025. By combining a network of global breeding experts with ILCI’s advanced research tools, the program will modernize coffee breeding and ensure that smallholder farmers have access to high-yield, future-ready coffee varieties.
