Originating from the majestic Western Rift Valley, Big Tree Estate PB #2516 is an emotional symphony, offering a healing melody to souls seeking tranquility. Crafted from rounded Peaberry beans – the convergence of the highlands’ essence and vital energy, this coffee lot delivers a deep, sweet purity interwoven with pristine aromas and a persistent aftertaste. Behind every cup lies a commitment to the “medical ethics” spirit, manifested through kindness from sustainable cultivation to meticulous processing, honoring both health and the original value of the coffee bean.

I. Big Tree Estate - An Ecosystem Rich in Values of Kindness

Big Tree Estate

Every great heritage in the world often begins with simple things, and at Big Tree Estate, that heritage stems from a name imbued with the breath of cultural intersection. Originally named “Fig Tree” by British owners, over time, the unique and intimate linguistic variations of the Kenyan people reshaped those syllables into something stronger and more steadfast: “Big Tree”.

The Wabuge family’s story with this land began in 1970 when they officially acquired the farm from a British owner. For over half a century, Big Tree Estate has quietly witnessed every rhythm of coffee history: from the vibrant golden years where coffee was the pride of the Kitale region, to periods of harsh market volatility that left many discouraged. Yet, amidst those storms, the roots of the Wabuge family remained deep in the mother soil, holding a steadfast belief in the true value of sustainable agriculture.

Fortunately, nature always reserves its greatest favors for those with enough patience and reverence. Located at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level, the farm enjoys a “micro-climate” paradise with stable rainfall and mineral-rich red-brown soil along the lush Nzoia River tributary. Under the direct management of Paul and Lusike Wabuge, the cultivation process here is not merely dry agronomic parameters, but a delicate intersection between precise techniques and pure love for the land. They understand that to create a “sweet and pure” coffee bean, the producer must invest both kindness toward the environment and respect for every living sprout.

Big Tree Estate

The most significant turning point, and the most touching chapter in Big Tree’s diary, was the homecoming in 2019.

Have you ever wondered: What could compel a surgeon at the peak of his career, receiving absolute respect from society, to decide to lay down the scalpel and pick up a hoe? That is Paul’s story.

Leaving the operating room in Murang’a, he and his brother Gabriel returned to Kitale to take over the farm’s destiny from their father – the former Kenyan Ambassador to the United States under the Reagan administration. This return was a commitment to revive fading heritage values, using a physician’s knowledge and medical ethics to heal and awaken the potential of their ancestral land.

Through perseverance and a humanistic vision, Paul has vibrantly revived Big Tree Estate from the isolated trees remaining after the industry’s decline, expanding the cultivation area to 24 acres by 2025. The Wabuge family’s proud return to the global Specialty coffee map is marked not only by the quality of premium beans but also by the story of the “doctor turned farmer”. It is a symbol of an ecosystem rich in values of kindness, where academic knowledge and a fierce love for agriculture have blended to create cups of coffee that carry a message of healing to everyone.

II. The Intense Vitality of Indigenous Coffee Varieties

If the ecosystem is the body, then the seed is the soul – the genetic code preserving the deepest memories of the Kitale land. At Big Tree Estate, the story of intense vitality is not written in distant laboratories, but from the resilience of indigenous varieties like SL28 and Batian – the “children” of Mother Kenya who have journeyed with the Wabuge family through countless sun-drenched seasons.

SL28 – A Witness to Time and Legendary Flavor

The name SL28 has long been an icon, a “living heritage” in the hearts of Specialty coffee lovers worldwide. Selected in the 1930s, SL28 carries a strange latent power: even when facing harsh droughts or soil fluctuations, it rises strongly with roots plunging deep into the mineral-rich red earth.

  • The beauty of resilience: At Big Tree, the SL28 trees are historical witnesses to a transition between two generations. Their survival through the period of decline is a testament to an unquenchable vitality.

  • The flavor of memory: What makes SL28 unique? It is the elegant acidity of berries intertwined with a lingering sweet purity – a complex flavor structure that only old trees, soaked in the sun and wind of the Western Rift Valley, can create.

Batian – The Intersection of Tradition and the Future

While SL28 embodies heritage, Batian represents new hope – a “guardian” for the farm’s sustainability. Named after Kenya’s highest peak, this variety possesses a tall stature and a resilient spirit against diseases.

  • The crystallization of knowledge: Batian not only possesses excellent resistance but also fully retains the exquisite flavor qualities of ancient coffee lineages.

  • Medical ethics in the seed: The choice to cultivate Batian clearly reflects the mindset of a physician – Paul Wabuge. He understands that a healthy body needs a strong immune system, and a sustainable farm needs plants capable of protecting themselves without relying on chemicals.

The co-presence of SL28 and Batian at Big Tree Estate is like a dialogue between the past and the future. These seeds, when sown by dedicated hands, are no longer mere agricultural products. They become bridges connecting the farmer’s heart to the soul of the connoisseur, carrying the sweet purity of life and a healing message from deep indigenous roots. Here, with each passing harvest, that intense vitality is reborn, reminding us that true value always lies in what is most original and sincere.

III. Flavors that Soothe the Senses

Big Tree Estate

The magic of Big Tree Estate PB #2516 begins the moment the rounded Peaberry beans embark on their Washed Processing journey. This method demands utmost meticulousness – a spirit of “medical ethics” applied to every pulse of time and temperature to fully preserve the purity bestowed by heaven and earth. The result of this painstaking craftsmanship is a cup of coffee with a radiant acidity, as clear and crisp as a mountain peak at dawn.

As each drop touches the palate, a symphony of flavors unfolds, guiding the connoisseur into a state of true comfort and healing:

  • Plum: An elegant, succulent acidity that evokes memories of lush, ripening orchards. It is never harsh but gentle, like a cool breeze blowing through a weary mind.

  • Cherry Cola: A delightful and modern highlight. The combination of sweet red fruit and a refreshing, energetic sensation makes every sip vibrant – a reminder of the joy found in life’s smallest details.

  • Honey Dark Chocolate: As the fruit notes gradually settle, what remains is the warm, steady embrace of rich dark chocolate, softened by the silky sweetness of wild forest honey. This aftertaste is long and smooth, enveloping the palate like a deeply empathetic hug.

Big Tree Estate

Savoring Big Tree Estate PB #2516 is how we allow ourselves to slow down by a beat, letting our senses be soothed by purity and our souls warmed by layers of profound flavor. It is no longer merely drinking a cup of coffee; it is a small ritual of self-love through the finest essence of nature.

IV. The Doctor Writing the Next Chapter of an Agricultural Dream

There are turning points in life that are not about quitting, but about transferring noble values. When Paul left the operating room to return to the fields, he did not leave his physician’s mindset behind. On the contrary, he brought with him discipline, absolute precision, and a heart full of reverence for life to sow into every inch of Big Tree Estate’s soil. To Paul, a healthy coffee tree deserves to be cared for with the same devotion as a human body.

Medical Principles Rooted in the Homeland

At Big Tree Estate, every plot of land is prepared as meticulously as a critical surgery, where error is not permitted. Paul applies scientific knowledge to create the most perfect living environment for the plants:

  • Optimal growth space: The distance between trees is generously calculated so that every leaf can fully capture sunlight for photosynthesis.

  • “Prescriptive” nutrition: Even as seedlings, each planting hole is fortified with 30kg of organic fertilizer. Every two years, each tree is “reinvigorated” with 40kg of bagasse (sugar cane pulp) – a rich nutrient source that improves soil structure and ensures sustainable moisture.

  • Symbiotic ecosystem: During the early years, rows of beans are intercropped between the coffee lines. They act as a “protective layer” for the earth, fixing natural nitrogen while nourishing the microbial ecosystem within the soil, creating a closed and peaceful cycle of life.

The Big Tree Estate PB #2516 Lot

A pinnacle representative of this meticulousness is the Big Tree Estate PB #2516 lot. This is a Peaberry line, unique coffee beans with a rounded shape instead of the usual two flat halves. Because each cherry nurtures only a single seed, the #2516 lot acts as a “pill” concentrating the entire nutritional essence and exquisite flavor of the coffee tree, offering an experience more intense and profound than ever before.

In honor of the Wabuge family’s medical ethics and passion, XLIII Coffee has chosen an extremely-light roasting method for this lot. We believe that only the most delicate roast can fully preserve the pristine notes, the original sweet purity, and the healing story that the farmer has infused into every green bean.

At XLIII Coffee, we cherish and connect human values from the farm to the hands of the connoisseur. Every cup you hold is a tribute to kindness, to sustainable agricultural philosophy, and to the ethical hands that braved hardship to continue the dream in the Western Rift Valley.
