Biochar: a sustainable solution for coffee farming
Coffee production is one of the factors that accelerate climate change. To minimize the burden on the global environment, all members of the supply chain have been focusing on finding solutions to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability in all stages of farming and coffee processing. Recently, the biochar specialist NetZero (France) and the coffee sustainability organization ECOM have cooperated to promote the use of biochar in coffee cultivation as a solution to improve sustainability in this process. Join XLIII Coffee to explore the potential of applying this material!
What is biochar?
Biochar is a solid material produced from the thermochemical conversion of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment. This material is recognized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as an important part of nature restoration and land reclamation. Biochar’s ability to improve soil quality comes from its high porosity and cation exchange capacity. This not only cuts the carbon emissions created in coffee production, but also helps increase crop yields, reduce fertilizer needs, and increase crop resilience to drought and other weather conditions other harshness.
Research demonstrates the potential of biochar
According to a 2013 scientific report, biochar can be used as a product or an ingredient in mixed products, to improve soil properties, remediate environmental pollution, and as a method of reducing greenhouse gases. Moreover, a team of researchers conducted field trials investigating biochar’s effectiveness in coffee farms in Puerto Rico. The results obtained in the survey show great potential for reducing carbon emissions in the application of biochar in coffee production. Coffee farmers can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from decomposing coffee residue while also providing part of the energy for the process through the co-production of biomass energy and biochar land reclamation process.

Application of biochar improves sustainability in coffee farming
In early February 2024, the biochar specialist NetZero in France and the coffee sustainability organization ECOM decided to cooperate in implementing a applying this material project in coffee farming. Experts say the project will demonstrate the role of biochar as a strategic solution for sustainable agriculture by integrating biochar into coffee farming. Most importantly, these efforts represent an important step toward decarbonizing agricultural supply chains, increasing crop yields, and improving farmer livelihoods.
The goal set out in this plan by NetZero and ECOM is to establish a dedicated coffee biochar production facility in Machado, Brazil. Construction is expected to begin on the plant in April 2024. According to estimates, the facility plans to produce 4,000 tons of biochar annually, enabling the direct removal of more than 6,000 tons of carbon emissions from the atmosphere. Additionally, it aims to reduce tens of thousands of tons of emissions previously produced by conventional agricultural practices.

Two companies NetZero and ECOM have decided to cooperate in implementing a biochar application project in coffee farming.
Integrating biochar into land management techniques can be a useful approach to achieving sustainable development. With the initiative to incorporate biochar into coffee farming, NetZero and ECOM expect results that can not only enhance coffee production but also create a positive impact on the environment and farming communities, demonstrating the potential for sustainable agriculture worldwide.
