Can young farmers be encouraged to stay in coffee farming?

Young farmers often seek better opportunities in modern industries, particularly in urban areas. Challenges like volatile coffee prices, limited technical support, and the physically demanding nature of the work make coffee farming less appealing. However, farming is not just about “tilling the soil and planting seeds”—it’s a story of creativity, innovation, and sustainable value.

How can we help the younger generation see the potential of this industry? Can young farmers be encouraged to stay in coffee farming? The answer may lie in changing how we support and perceive their role in coffee farming.

Why Are Young Farmers Leaving Coffee Farming?

The rate of young farmers leaving the coffee industry in Vietnam and globally has yet to be documented with specific official statistics. However, numerous sources indicate that this trend is on the rise. The primary reasons include unstable income due to climate change, fluctuating market prices, rising production costs, low industry prospects, and a lack of technical and technological support in farming practices.

Firstly, the shift to cultivating other crops with higher profitability, such as durian, is becoming increasingly prominent. According to information from Báo Lao Động, the profit from durian can reach approximately 2 billion VND per hectare per year, five times higher than that of coffee. This has prompted many farmers, especially the younger generation, to transition to growing durian to increase their income.

In addition, the lack of stable job opportunities and income in rural areas has driven many young people to seek opportunities in cities or industrial zones. The NESCAFÉ Plan has attracted some young farmers to sustainable coffee production, but the number remains limited. Furthermore, the lack of support in technology, technical training, and market access has left many young farmers struggling and demotivated to continue their engagement in coffee farming.

Adding “Reality” to the Dream of Coffee Farming

To retain young farmers, ensuring economic fairness and transparency is crucial. Coffee prices are often volatile, exposing farmers—especially those new to the industry—to significant risks. Direct trade and Fair Trade models could be effective solutions, guaranteeing farmers a fair product price. When income stability is ensured, young farmers will see themselves not just as laborers but as valuable partners in the global value chain. This recognition fosters long-term commitment and pride in their work.

Modern technology is another key factor in “revitalizing” coffee farming to attract young talent. Tools like drones equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) can monitor crops, detect pests, and apply pesticides with precision, increasing efficiency while reducing manual labor. Additionally, IoT sensors can track soil moisture and environmental conditions, optimizing irrigation and fertilization. Implementing these technologies not only enhances productivity and quality but also appeals to the creativity and innovation of young people, offering exciting opportunities in modern agriculture.

Education and specialized training are also indispensable. Courses on advanced farming techniques, production management, and coffee product commercialization can empower young farmers to master both the fields and the market. By connecting them with industry experts and providing access to new knowledge, we can motivate them to contribute to the coffee sector’s growth while developing their entrepreneurial skills.

Retaining young farmers is not solely their responsibility—it requires the collective effort of communities, businesses, and governments. A long-term vision, supported by favorable policies, innovation incentives, and market assistance, is essential to drive meaningful change.

Farming can be more than just “dirty hands and hard work”; it can be an exciting journey of creativity and sustainability. Let’s listen, share, and support the younger generation, because they are the ones who will modernize Vietnam’s coffee industry and elevate its name on the global stage.

Nueva Alianza Sidra #4736 – The sweetness born from the resilience of the Andes

Unlike the airy aromatic layers so often encountered, a cup of Nueva Alianza Sidra #4736 takes command of the palate through a distinctly physical sense of “weight” the creamy richness of Blueberry Yogurt and the dense, syrupy sweetness of a spoonful of Berry Jam. This shimmering, viscous body, achieved through the traditional Natural process, is the compressed result of the harsh cold currents that sweep across the Andes at 1,820 meters above sea level. At a deeper level, the sheer weight carried within this cup becomes a beautiful metaphor for the iron discipline and resilience of producer Dwight Aguilar Masías  a man who has spent his entire life holding his ground, protecting an inherited landscape against the brutal upheavals of time and circumstance.

Ziriguidum #2 – A Proud Rhythm from the Heart of the Cerrado Savanna
