Musa Abalulesa #0001: The True Essence of Specialty Coffee

Musa Abalulesa #0001 is a Specialty Coffee lot that meets SCA standards, originating from Musa Abalulesa Farm in Goma district. Beyond the refined characteristics of varieties 74110 and 74165, this coffee encapsulates the dedication of Musa Aba Lulesa in maintaining quality and fostering sustainable development.

I. Coffee Varieties & Growing Region

Musa Abalulesa #0001 is a Washed, Grade 1 coffee lot cultivated in the Goma District, Oma Funtule region of East Africa, at an ideal altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level. This area is renowned for producing high-quality East African coffee, thanks to its cool climate and nutrient-rich soil, providing optimal conditions for indigenous coffee varieties to thrive.

The primary varieties grown in this lot are 74110 and 74165, both improved cultivars derived from East Africa’s Heirloom lineage. These varieties were carefully selected by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) for their disease resistance and exceptional cup quality.

II. Production Process of Musa Abalulesa #0001

Musa Abalulesa #0001 is cultivated and processed by Musa Abalulesa Farm, in collaboration with 21 smallholder farmers, spanning a total of 44 hectares. Under the leadership of Musa Aba Lulesa, who inherited his father’s legacy, the farm has undergone continuous improvements to enhance coffee quality. Investments have been made in new coffee seedlings, covered drying beds, and expanded storage facilities, ensuring a more efficient and sustainable production process.

This lot is processed using the Fully Washed method to preserve clarity and refine the coffee’s flavors. In the most recent September 2024 harvest, only perfectly ripe cherries were hand-picked with strict selection criteria. The cherries were then pulped using traditional disc pulpers, followed by a 10-12 hour wet fermentation. This step removes any remaining mucilage, contributing to a clean and bright flavor profile.

After fermentation, the beans were thoroughly washed and dried on raised beds for 9-12 days. This drying method ensures even moisture reduction, prevents mold, and maintains consistent coffee quality. Musa Abalulesa pays particular attention to storage conditions, continually expanding his warehouse capacity to preserve coffee at peak freshness before export.

All of these efforts are driven by a single goal: to produce Specialty Coffee that embodies the authentic essence of East Africa, offering an exceptional sensory experience and a taste of true craftsmanship.
