Species
Species is the fundamental unit of biological classification, comprising a group of organisms that share common characteristics and can interbreed in nature to produce fertile offspring (capable of reproduction).
The key characteristic of a species is its reproductive isolation from other species groups. Members of the same species share a common gene pool and a distinct evolutionary history, leading to significant genetic and morphological similarities.
A prime example in the coffee industry is Coffea arabica (Arabica) and Coffea canephora (Robusta). These are the two most common coffee species, and they differ distinctly in flavor, growing conditions, and genetic characteristics.
