Pink coffee flowers – New shade symbolizing the genetic diversity of coffee
When it comes to coffee flowering season, we are all familiar with the pure white flower color and characteristic scent. However, on some farms, farmers encounter pink coffee flowers. Is this a new variety with potential? Let’s find out with XLIII Coffee!
Why are coffee flowers pink?
According to researcher Oliveiro, pink coffee flowers are usually due to two main reasons: natural genetic variations or spontaneous genetic mutations. As a result of natural genetic variations, the parent variety itself already has the characteristic of having pink flowers from the start. Such as Coffea racemosa and Aramosa.
In the second case, pink flowers may be the product of a spontaneous genetic mutation called purpurascens. Purpurascens coffee flowers are pink because their gene expression affects the color of the entire plant, not just the flower, which is different from the natural genetic structure of coffee varieties that causes them to produce pink flowers. In addition, coffee plants infected with purpura, young and mature leaves or with new stems and leaflets may also be pink or purple.

Some coffee varieties have pink flowers
Coffee varieties with pink flowers are quite rare on the market. According to information provided by scientists, coffee plants with this special form often appear in some former British colonies and are called “orange coffee”. They are also present in some areas in Indonesia under the name Koppi Wengue, in Brazil under the name “purple coffee” or “café carangola”. As for the coffee mutant purpurascens, it was first scientifically recorded to be discovered in Java, Indonesia in the early 1900s and identified as a mutation of Typica.
Aramosa Coffee
Aramosa coffee is a natural hybrid between the Arabica and Racemosa species. Racemosa coffee is one of the oldest species originating from Mozambique and was first introduced to producers in Brazil in 1954. Aramosa coffee plants stand out for their vigor and resilience. , even in harsh weather conditions. Coffee flowers are pink in color. When ripe, its berries are burgundy in color with low caffeine content compared to other types of coffee.

Finca El Socorro Purpuracea variety
Finca El Socorro Purpuracea coffee is a spontaneous mutant coffee similar to Maracaturra. It was grown by Juan Diego de la Cerva at Finca El Socorro farm, Guatemala. The trees initially grew normally until 2009, some coffee trees appeared purple leaves. Then, after some time, when propagated, some seedlings transform into different forms and have lower yields than the parent variety. However, when tasted, their flavor profiles were highly appreciated. Some batches scored over 90 points with extremely unique flavor profiles.

Purpuracea pink coffee flowers - a sign of superior genetic code
Many coffee experts, when trying to taste Purpuracea coffee, are fascinated and appreciate the uniqueness of this type of coffee. Very high and rich acidity. Purpuracea mutant coffee has a clear sweet and sour taste, vibrancy and subtle changes between flavor layers. The flavor spectrum can be diverse with notes resembling lychee, black currant and ripe plum (when wet processed) or with notes of plum, cotton candy, pear and green tea (when naturally processed). These characteristics have earned them high recognition for their growth potential within the specialty coffee ranks.

For scientists, coffee varieties that differ in characteristics from one generation to the next, such as coffee with pink flowers, will often be classified as separate cultivars. They will be put into research and breeding institutes to preserve and further explore the unique characteristics of coffee.
In addition, spontaneously mutated pink-flowered coffee varieties may possess useful and groundbreaking genetic codes that are beneficial to the development of coffee variety quality. For example, the Finca El Socorro Purpuracea variety is grafted and grown on a commercial scale by the manufacturer. Some of these coffee lots then helped Finca El Socorro win the Cup of Excellence Guatemala competition throughout 2007, 2011 and 2020.

Coffee varieties always contain characteristics that exceed expectations. If we make efforts to research, exploit and promote potential, we will be able to witness many wonderful transformations in the specialty coffee market. If you want to experience this uniqueness, come to XLIII Coffee!
